何事を待つとはなしに明け暮れて
今年も今日になりにけるかな

Roma-ji: Nanigoto o matsu to wa nashi ni akekurete kotoshi mo kyō ni narinikeru kana
English Translation: Not that I awaited
anything in particular,
dawns and dusks went by,
and this year too has come
at last to this one day
Meaning: Not waiting for anything in particular, I have passed the days from dawn to dusk, and now this year too has come to its final day.
Commentary: Book Four Winter Poems 304

Not waiting for anything in particular, merely passing the days from dawn to dusk, the poet finds that this year too has come to its last day. Looking back on a year that slipped by uneventfully, the poem quietly expresses the feeling of reaching the year's end.
This is the closing poem of Book Four, Winter Poems. Where the opening poem, 257, began winter with the showers and leaves of the Tenth Month, this poem closes the winter book with the last day of the year, so that the beginning and end of the book answer each other as the start and close of winter.
From poem 299 through poem 304 in this book come poems lamenting the year's end, bringing the winter book to a close.
The author, Kuninobu, is Minamoto no Kuninobu. A son of the Minister of the Right Minamoto no Akifusa, he rose to Provisional Middle Counselor. One of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences, he was active in the circle of Emperor Horikawa.

First line, 'nanigoto o', means anything, together with the second line showing there was nothing in particular to wait for.
Second line, 'matsu to wa nashi ni', means not that I waited.
Third line, 'akekurete', means dawns breaking and days darkening, passing the days.
Fourth line, 'kotoshi mo kyō ni', means this year too, to this day, kyō pointing to the last day of the year.
Final line, 'narinikeru kana', means it has come, the attributive of the exclamatory keri with the exclamatory kana.
