Meaning

Commentary
Book Five Celebration Poems 316

Having met the cloudless Feast of Plenty, Asahi Village in Ōmi, already named for the morning sun, shines with still more light. With ōmi meaning both to meet and the province of Ōmi, the poem strings together words of brightness, the akari of the feast, the morning sun and light, to celebrate the radiance of the reign.
The Feast of Plenty is the banquet held after the Great Thanksgiving Festival or the Harvest Festival, and this poem appears to be connected with the Great Thanksgiving.
From poem 315 through poem 319 in this book come poems that weave in place names such as Tsuzumi Mountain, Asahi Village, Okoto Village and Nima Village to celebrate a well-ordered reign. Celebrating the reign by weaving in place names is a form often seen in the poems of the Yuki and Suki provinces at the Great Thanksgiving Festival.

First line, 'kumori naki', means without a cloud, together with akari in the second line showing a bright and shining reign. The closing poem of this book, 333, also begins with 'kumori naku', without a cloud, and sings of the morning sun.
Second line, 'toyo no akari ni', means at the Feast of Plenty, akari also suggesting the brightness of light.
Third line, 'ōmi naru', is a pivot word in which aumi means both meeting the feast and the province of Ōmi, left in kana.
Fourth line, 'asahi no sato wa', is Asahi Village in Ōmi, its name of the morning sun tied to light. Poems 325 and 333 in this book also sing of the morning sun.
Final line, 'hikari sashisou', means light shines in still more, a word related to akari and asahi.
