Book Six Parting Poems 345
Because the one who parted from the poet has gone, as autumn mist rises, the poet wanders in thoughts that never clear, as mist does not clear. With autumn mist as its lead-in, the poem strings together words tied to mist, tatsu, to rise, harenu, not clearing, and madou, to lose one's way, to show a heart that does not lift after parting.
The preceding poem, 344, and this poem form a pair that both sing of tachiwakaru, parting. Where the preceding poem asked for news after the parting, this poem sings of the heart once the parting has come.
The author, Mototoshi, is Fujiwara no Mototoshi, a son of the Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Toshiie. Though he did not rise high in rank, he was known as a leader of the poetic world alongside Minamoto no Toshiyori, and one of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'akigiri no', means the autumn mist, leading into tachi, to rise, in the second line because mist rises.
Second line, 'tachiwakarenuru', is a pivot word in which tachi means both the rising of mist and setting out in parting, left in kana, with the attributive of the perfective nu. Like 'tachiwakaru tomo' in the preceding poem, 344, it sings of parting.
Third line, 'kimi ni yori', means because of you, giving the cause of the poet's thoughts.
Fourth line, 'harenu omoi ni', means in thoughts that do not clear, haru, to clear, being a word related to the mist of the first line.
Final line, 'madoinuru kana', means I have wandered lost, layering the bewildered heart over losing one's way in mist. The perfective nu with kana adds a note of exclamation.
