In the rising sun
climbing up into the sky
I will think of you:
in the moon that sinks away
do not forget me

In the rising morning sun I will remember you; and you, when you see the sinking moon, do not forget me.
Commentary
Book Six Parting Poems 348

The poet will remember the other in the rising morning sun and asks the other not to forget the poet in the sinking moon. Pairing the rising sun with the setting moon, and the poet who remembers with the friend asked not to forget, the poem expresses the wish that the two keep each other in mind though far apart.
Some manuscripts name the Provisional Middle Counselor Michitoshi as the author and give the headnote 'Sent to Kinzane on the day he went down accompanying Tsunehira, Senior Assistant Governor-General.' It would then be a poem sent by Fujiwara no Michitoshi to Fujiwara no Kinzane on the day he set out with his father, Fujiwara no Tsunehira, newly made Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu, so that the sun rising in the east and the moon sinking in the west would stand for the capital and the western post.
The author, Koben, was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Yūshi, a daughter of Emperor Go-Suzaku. She is said to have been the mother of the poet Kii of Princess Yūshi's Household.

First line, 'sashinoboru', means rising up, set against katabuku, sinking, in the fourth line.
Second line, 'asahi ni kimi o', means you, in the morning sun, set against 'in the moon' in the fourth line and 'me' in the final line.
Third line, 'omoiidemu', means I will remember, using the volitional mu. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'katabuku tsuki ni', means in the moon sinking westward. The moon also appears in 'the moon of autumn night' in poem 340 in this book.
Final line, 'ware o wasuru na', means do not forget me, using the prohibitive particle na. Like the final line 'nasake wasuru na' of poem 344 in this book, it closes with 'wasuru na'.
