Book Seven Love Poems I 356
Sleepless nights go on as the poet thinks of the beloved, yet since that sleeplessness comes from the beloved, he now takes it as a friend. The poem shows a heart that cherishes even suffering as a tie to the one it loves.
Some manuscripts name the priest Sengen as the author.
First line, 'ima wa tada', means now only.
Second line, 'nerarenu i o zo', means the sleep that will not come, i being a noun meaning sleep. The particle zo binds with the attributive suru in the third line.
Third line, 'tomo to suru', means I take as friend. The poem breaks after the third line, which is inverted with the lower half.
Fourth line, 'koishiki hito no', means of the one I long for. The second line of poem 369 in this book is also 'koishiki hito no'.
Final line, 'yukari to omoeba', means since I think of it as a tie, the realis with ba forming a definite condition.
