Book Seven Love Poems I 362
The poet asks whether the other remembers that night, when the place they lay, named for the knots of the black bamboo, was astonishingly poor. The meanness of the bed they shared is sung as a memory all the harder to forget.
Some manuscripts give a headnote saying that it was sent some days after the poet had spoken with someone at a certain place.
The author, Kinzane, is Fujiwara no Kinzane. A son of Fujiwara no Sanesue, he served as Master of the Crown Prince's Household and rose to Provisional Major Counselor, and was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences.
First line, 'omoiizu ya', means do you remember, the particle ya posing a question. The line has an extra syllable, and the poem breaks after it.
Second line, 'arishi sono yo no', means of that night, using the attributive of the past ki to point to the night they spent together. Yo, night, echoes yo, the space between the knots of a bamboo, forming a related word with the black bamboo in the third line.
Third line, 'kuretake wa', is a kind of bamboo said to have come from China.
Fourth line, 'asamashikarishi', means astonishingly poor. It uses the same word as the first line 'asamashi ya' of poems 372 and 396 in this book.
Final line, 'fushidokoro kana', is a pivot word in which fushi means both fushi, the knot of a bamboo, and fushi, lying down, left in kana. The particle kana adds a note of exclamation.
