Book Seven Love Poems I 365
However cold the beloved's heart may be in waking life, the poet asks at least to be shown a meeting in dreams. Giving up on a real meeting, the poem expresses a heart that rests its hopes on dreams alone.
Some manuscripts name Fujiwara no Saneyoshi as the author and give the headnote 'Composed on love likened to dreams.' It would then be a poem on that topic.
Poems 354, 381 and 415 in this book also sing of dream and waking.
First line, 'yume ni dani', means in dreams at least, using the particle dani.
Second line, 'au to wa mie yo', means let me see that we meet, an imperative expressing a wish. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'samo koso wa', means however it may be, answering tomo in the final line to mean even if that is so.
Fourth line, 'utsutsu ni tsuraki', means cold in waking life, set against the dream of the first line. It also answers the second line 'utsutsu no kai wa' of poem 354 in this book.
Final line, 'kokoro naritomo', means even if your heart is so, using the concessive supposition tomo.
