how deeply I resent her

Book Seven Love Poems I 370
The poet could say 'it is cruel' only because his love was still shallow; now that it has deepened he cannot put it into words, and he laments how he might make the beloved know his resentment. By paradox the poem shows a resentment too deep for words.
Some manuscripts mark it 'topic unknown'.
First line, 'tsurashi tomo', means even that it is cruel.
Second line, 'oroka naru ni zo', means precisely because it was careless, that is, because his love was shallow, the particle zo binding with the attributive keru in the third line.
Third line, 'iwarekeru', means I was able to say, the potential ru joined to the exclamatory keri. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'ika ni uramu to', means how much I resent. Poems 391, 392 and 395 in this book also sing of resentment.
Final line, 'hito ni shirasemu', means shall I let her know, taking up ika ni in the fourth line as the poet wonders how he might let her know.
