Book Seven Love Poems I 376
However the poet tried to hide her love from others' eyes, that bank could not hold back the river of tears, and at last the rumor of her love has flowed out into the world. The poem strings together words tied to a river: namidagawa, nagaru, tatsu, tsutsumi and seku.
Some manuscripts name the mother of Lieutenant Kinnori as the author.
Poems 375 through 377 in this book form a run on the river of tears. Poem 375 likens the sleeve to a weir, poem 376 finds the bank of discretion unable to hold back the tears, and poem 377 sings of the sleeve's weir rotted away, so that the arrangement shows the tears overflowing step by step.
First line, 'nagarete no', means having flowed abroad, laying the flowing of the river of tears over the spreading of rumor.
Second line, 'na ni zo tachinuru', means my name has risen, tatsu echoing the rising of waves. The particle zo binds with the attributive nuru. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'namidagawa', means the river of tears. Like 'the river of tears' in the preceding poem, 375, and the first line of the next poem, 377, it sings of that river.
Fourth line, 'hitome tsutsumi o', is a pivot word in which tsutsumi means both tsutsumi, hiding from others' eyes, and tsutsumi, the bank of a river, left in kana.
Final line, 'sekishi aeneba', means since it could not hold them back, with the intensive shi and the realis of the negative zu with ba forming a definite condition. Seku, to dam, is a word related to the river of tears in the third line.
