Yo to tomo ni tama chiru toko no sugamakura misebaya hito ni yowa no keshiki o

English Translation
Night after night
where jewels scatter on my bed,
O pillow of sedge,
how I wish I could show her
how it is at midnight here
Meaning
Night after night, jewel-tears scatter over my bed and its pillow of sedge; how I would like to show her the scene here in the depths of the night.
Commentary
Book Seven Love Poems I 387

The poet wishes he could show the beloved his sedge pillow, on which jewel-like tears scatter night after night, as it looks in the depths of the night. The abundance of tears shed in a lonely bed is rendered beautifully as scattering jewels.
Some manuscripts give the headnote 'Composed on the sentiment of love at night at a poetry contest at Lord Kunizane's house.' It would then be a poem on that topic from a contest at the house of Minamoto no Kunizane.
The author, Toshiyori, is Minamoto no Toshiyori. A son of the Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu, he compiled this anthology at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa.

First line, 'yo to tomo ni', means night after night. It is the same as the third line 'yo to tomo ni' of poem 374 in this book.
Second line, 'tama chiru toko no', means of the bed where jewel-like tears scatter. 'Tama nukikakuru' in poem 405 in this book also likens tears to jewels.
Third line, 'sugamakura', is a pillow woven of sedge, here addressed directly. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'misebaya hito ni', means I wish I could show her, using the wishing particle baya and leading by inversion into the final line. Like the first line 'misebaya na' of poem 405 in this book, it wishes to show the beloved the poet's tears.
Final line, 'yowa no keshiki o', means the scene at midnight. It closes in the same form as the final line 'tabi no keshiki o' of poem 405 in this book.
