Shimakaze ni shiba tatsu nami no yachi kaeri uramite mo nao tanomaruru kana

English Translation
As the island wind
sends the waves again, again,
a thousand times back,
though I resent you, still
I find I trust in you
Meaning
Like the waves the island wind raises again and again, rolling back a thousand times, however often I resent you, I still find myself trusting you.
Commentary
Book Seven Love Poems I 395

As the waves raised over and over by the island wind roll back to the bay again and again, however many times the poet resents the other, he still finds himself trusting them. The waves that keep returning carry a love that resents yet cannot let go.
Some manuscripts name Fujiwara no Nobunori as the author and give the headnote 'Sent in resentment to someone.'
Poems 370, 391 and 392 in this book also sing of resentment.

First line, 'shimakaze ni', means in the island wind.
Second line, 'shiba tatsu nami no', means of the waves that rise again and again, shiba meaning often.
Third line, 'yachi kaeri', means returning many times, layering the waves rolling back over the poet's repeated resentment. The first three lines form a preface.
Fourth line, 'uramite mo nao', is a pivot word in which urami means both urami, seeing the bay where waves break, and urami, resentment, left in kana. The same pivot word appears in poems 357, 392 and 409 in this book.
Final line, 'tanomaruru kana', means I find myself trusting, the spontaneous ru joined to the particle kana.
