Book Seven Love Poems I 400
Though no one has promised to be with him in the next life, the poet keeps saying he wants to die from the pain of love, and reflects that this is empty. A heart driven to extremes by love and a heart that looks on it coolly cross one another.
Some manuscripts name Fujiwara no Narimichi as the author and give the headnote 'Composed as a love poem.'
Poem 403 in this book also joins pledges and death.
First line, 'nochi no yo to', means for the next life.
Second line, 'chigirishi hito mo', means anyone who promised, using the attributive of the past ki. Like the second line 'kakete chigirishi' of poem 403 in this book, it sings of a pledge.
Third line, 'naki mono o', means though there is none, using the concessive mono o.
Fourth line, 'shinabaya to nomi', means only that I want to die, using the wishing particle baya.
Final line, 'iu zo hakanaki', means saying so is empty, the particle zo binding with the attributive hakanaki.
