Kokorozashi asaji ga sue ni oku tsuyu no tamasaka ni tou hito wa tanomaji

English Translation
Shallow in their love,
like the dew upon the tips
of the shallow reeds,
one who calls just now and then,
on such a one I won't rely
Meaning
Shallow in love like the dew on the tips of the low reeds, one who comes only now and then like a passing drop, such a one I will not rely on.
Commentary
Book Seven Love Poems I 408

Like dewdrops on the tips of low reeds, one whose love is shallow and who calls only now and then is not to be relied on. With asaji echoing asashi, shallow, and tamasaka echoing tama, a drop of dew, the poem turns coolly away from the other's lack of sincerity.
Some manuscripts give the headnote 'When he had people compose love poems, written on behalf of another.' It would then be a poem composed for someone else on such an occasion.
Poem 416 in this book likewise sings of rare visits through drops of dew, with 'tamatama kite wa', forming a pair with this poem.
The author, Tadamichi, is Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadazane, he served in turn as Regent, Chancellor and Grand Minister, was known as the Hosshōji Lay Priest, and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, 'kokorozashi', means sincerity or affection.
Second line, 'asaji ga sue ni', is a pivot word in which asaji means both asashi, the shallowness of one's affection, and asaji, low reeds, left in kana.
Third line, 'oku tsuyu no', means of the dew that settles, and from tama, a drop of dew, it leads into tamasaka in the fourth line. The first three lines form a preface. Dew also appears in poems 385, 416 and 420 in this book.
Fourth line, 'tamasaka ni tou', means who visits only now and then, tama echoing a drop of dew. It answers 'tamatama kite wa' in poem 416 in this book.
Final line, 'hito wa tanomaji', means such a one I will not rely on, using the negative volitional ji.
