Book Eight Love Poems II 421
Hoping that a gentle hint might let the beloved know his feelings, the poet has entrusted his love even to the hazy sky of spring. Through the conceit of hinting at a love he cannot openly confess by giving it over to the spring haze, the poem conveys the frustration of hidden love.
This is the opening poem of Book Eight, Love Poems II. Following poem 350, the opening poem of Book Seven, Love Poems I, which sang of surprise at stepping onto the path of love, this book begins with a poem that entrusts a still unspoken love to the spring haze. The closing poem, 515, ends the love section lamenting that one was not born to love, so a book that opens with a faint hint closes with a lament over love itself.
The author, Ryōzen, was a Tendai monk of the mid-Heian period who is said to have served as superintendent of the Gion Shrine. One of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'kasumete wa', is a pivot word in which kasume means both to hint softly and to be veiled in haze, left in kana. The particle te followed by wa gives the sense of when I hint.
Second line, 'omou kokoro o', means the heart that loves.
Third line, 'shiru ya tote', means wondering whether you would know, the question in ya taken up by tote.
Fourth line, 'haru no sora ni mo', means even to the sky of spring, a word related to the haze of the first line. The particle mo adds the sense of even.
Final line, 'makasetsuru kana', means I have entrusted it, with the attributive of the perfective tsu followed by the exclamatory kana.
