Book Eight Love Poems II 440
From now on, the poet resolves, she will not think of the beloved at all, for even to say I resent you is something one does only while some hope remains. In the resolve to give up even resentment, the poem conveys the end of a love whose hope has run out.
Where poem 430 in this book resents a lover whose heart has changed with urameshiki kana, how bitter, this poem dismisses even resentment as something that belongs to hope, singing of the giving up that lies beyond resentment.
First line, 'ima yori wa', means from now on.
Second line, 'omoi mo ideji', means I will not even think of you, using the negative volitional ji. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'urameshi to', means that you are bitter to me.
Fourth line, 'iu mo tanomi no', means even saying so is of hope, tanomi being the heart that relies on the other.
Final line, 'kakaru kagiri zo', means only so long as it clings, the particle zo making a firm assertion.
