Book Eight Love Poems II 442
Even if the beloved will not meet him, the poet asks to be remembered after he has left this world as one who lost his life for her sake. The poem conveys the resolve to stake his life on an unrequited love and the aching wish to be remembered at least after death.
Poem 420, the closing poem of Book Seven, laments a dewlike life sustained without a single word to rely on, and this poem carries that lament further by imagining the time after life has ended for love.
First line, 'awazu tomo', means even if you do not meet me, using the concessive tomo.
Second line, 'nakaramu yo ni mo', means even in the world when I am no more, using the attributive of the conjectural mu.
Third line, 'omoiideyo', means remember, the poem breaking after the third line on the imperative. By inversion it asks that the lower verse be remembered.
Fourth line, 'ware yue inochi', means a life, because of me.
Final line, 'taeshi hito zo to', means that this was one whose life was cut off, using shi, the attributive of the past ki, and the emphatic particle zo.
