Mezurashi ya iwama ni yodomu wasuremizu ikuka o sugite omoiizuramu

English Translation
How rare a thing!
Water pooled among the rocks,
forgotten water—
how many days have gone by
before you thought of me again
Meaning
How rare this is! Like water forgotten, pooled among the rocks, I wonder how many days had to pass before you thought of me again.
Commentary
Book Eight Love Poems II 458

The poet, like forgotten water pooled among the rocks, wonders how many days passed before the other remembered her, and finds it a rare thing indeed. The poem seems to express ironic surprise on receiving word from someone long silent.

First line, 'mezurashi ya', means how rare, the poem breaking after the first line with the exclamatory ya.
Second line, 'iwama ni yodomu', means lying still between the rocks.
Third line, 'wasuremizu', is water that flows quietly unknown to anyone, standing for the forgotten poet.
Fourth line, 'ikuka o sugite', means after how many days had passed.
Final line, 'omoiizuramu', means did you think of me, using the conjectural ramu to wonder at the days it took the other to remember.
