I have spoken—in Iwase's wood
the leaves below
once they show their crimson hue
must surely scatter too

Book Eight Love Poems II 472
As the lower leaves of the forest of Iwase fall once they turn red, so today, having let his feelings be spoken, the poet expects that now his love has shown itself, rumor will scatter far and wide. Punning on iwase, to let be spoken, and Iwase, the poem conveys resolve and unease at a hidden love coming to light.
Poem 422 in this book also sings of shitamomiji, expressing feelings that color in secret.
The author, Kanemasa, is Minamoto no Kanemasa. A son of Minamoto no Toshisuke, he served as Junior Secretary of the Empress's Household, was active in poetry contests in the time of Emperor Horikawa, and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'kyō koso wa', means today at last, the particle koso answered by rame in the final line.
Second line, 'Iwase no mori no', is a pivot word in which iwase means both letting it be spoken and the forest of Iwase, a famous place in Yamato, left in kana.
Third line, 'shitamomiji', means the reddening lower leaves, standing for a love deepened in secret. It is the same word as shitamomiji suru in the fourth line of poem 422 in this book.
Fourth line, 'iro ni izureba', means since it has shown its color, layering the reddening of the leaves with love coming to the surface.
Final line, 'chiri mo shinurame', means it must surely scatter, the perfective nu followed by rame, the perfective form of the conjectural ramu, closing in answer to koso in the first line. The scattering of the leaves is overlaid with the spreading of rumor.
