Uramu na yo kage miegataki yūzukuyo oboroke naranu kumoma matsu mi zo

English Translation
Do not hold it against me:
like the moon of early evening
hard to glimpse at all,
I am one who waits for
no common break among the clouds
Meaning
Do not resent me; like the evening moon so hard to glimpse, I am one who waits for no ordinary break in the clouds.
Commentary
Book Eight Love Poems II 483

As the faint evening moon will not show itself without a rare break in the clouds, so the poet waits for no ordinary chance, and asks not to be resented. Likening the reasons they cannot meet at once to the evening moon so often hidden by clouds, she soothes the other.
The next poem, 484, uses the same words oboroke naranu and sings of breaking out from above the clouds, driven by no ordinary longing, like the crescent moon splitting through, so the two answer each other through the moon and the clouds.
The author, Kii of Princess Yūshi's Household, was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Yūshi, daughter of Emperor Go-Suzaku. Her mother, Koben, also served the princess, and one of Kii's poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, 'uramu na yo', means do not resent me, the prohibitive na followed by yo, the poem breaking after the first line.
Second line, 'kage miegataki', means whose light is hard to see.
Third line, 'yūzukuyo', is the moon that rises in the evening, standing for the poet herself. Like the yūzukuhi, evening sun, of poem 427 in this book, it is an image of dusk.
Fourth line, 'oboroke naranu', means no ordinary, the same words as the second line of the next poem, 484.
Final line, 'kumoma matsu mi zo', means I am one who waits for a break in the clouds, asserted firmly with zo. The break in the clouds stands for a chance to meet.
