Book Eight Love Poems II 489
Like the sky of the early summer rains, only empty promises continue without a break, the poet says, and the name of a forgotten woman has spread through the world and grown old. Punning on furu, to fall and to grow old, the poem conveys through the long rains the lament of one kept waiting by promises that cannot be trusted.
The next poem, 490, answers that the name of one forgotten will not spread, for even the early summer rains must let up for a while, so the two take the form of an exchange around the rains and furu.
First line, 'samidare no', means of the long rains of the fifth month, leading into sora, sky, in the second line. It is the same word as samidare mo in the third line of the next poem, 490.
Second line, 'soradanome nomi', means nothing but empty promises, sora echoing the sky of the rains.
Third line, 'hima nakute', means without a break, overlaid with the rains falling without pause.
Fourth line, 'wasuraruru na zo', means the name of one forgotten, the particle zo answered by keru in the final line.
Final line, 'yo ni furinikeru', is a pivot word in which furi means both rain falling and a name spreading and growing old, left in kana. It closes with keru, the attributive of the exclamatory keri, in answer to zo in the fourth line. Furaji in the second line of the next poem, 490, uses the same pivot word.
