- English Translation
-
Like the wind that blows
back the clouds of heaven, still
no sound of reply:
surely it must be your heart
that wants none of my love

Book Eight Love Poems II 491
As no sound comes from the wind that blows back the clouds, so no reply comes, and the poet concludes that the other does not wish to be loved. Punning on kaeshi, blowing back and a reply, the poem likens the coldness of one who sends no answer to a silent wind.
First line, 'amagumo no', means of the clouds of the sky, leading into kaeshi in the second line.
Second line, 'kaeshi no kaze no', is a pivot word in which kaeshi means both the wind blowing back the clouds and a reply to a letter or poem, left in kana.
Third line, 'oto senu wa', means that there is no sound, overlaid with the lack of any word.
Fourth line, 'omowareji to no', means meaning not to be loved, the passive ru followed by the negative volitional ji.
Final line, 'kokoro narubeshi', means it must be your heart, the assertive nari followed by the conjectural beshi.
