with wind in the pines?
It should be played and cited
as a token of long ages
Meaning
Does the sound of the koto blend with the wind blowing through the pines? It should be played and held up as a model of a thousand ages.
Commentary
Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 541

Does the sound of the koto blend with the wind in the pines? the poet asks, and since the pine keeps its age for a thousand years, the music deserves to be cited and played as a precedent for long life. Singing of the harmony between koto music and pine wind, the poem uses the thousand-year pine to celebrate the long life of the player or of the occasion.
It draws on the Shūi Wakashū poem by the Ise Priestess Consort that the pine wind on the peaks seems to blend with the koto's music, and wonders from which string the tune began, carrying on the conceit of koto and pine wind in harmony. Poems 542 and 543 in this book also sing of the koto's sound flowing, so three poems on the koto stand together.

First line, 'koto no ne ya', means the koto's sound, the particle ya expressing a question answered by ramu in the second line.
Second line, 'matsu fuku kaze ni', means with the wind blowing through the pines, the sound of the pine wind.
Third line, 'kayouramu', means does it blend, the attributive of the conjectural ramu answering ya in the first line; the poem breaks here. It uses the same verb as kayoikeru kana in the final line of the next poem, 542, and kayoeba ya in the third line of 543.
Fourth line, 'chiyo no tameshi ni', means as a model for a thousand ages, after the pine that lives a thousand years.
Final line, 'hikitsubeki kana', is a pivot in which hiki means both to cite as an example and to play the koto, left in kana. The intensive tsu, the beshi of obligation and the exclamatory kana follow.
