Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 551
Like the waves that come and go in the inlet where seaweed is gathered from the rocks, the poet wishes for life to last until returning to see you again. The earnest hope of living on until reunion with someone departing on a long journey, or someone parting, is entrusted to the waves of the inlet.
The next poem, 552, is also a seaside poem of fisherfolk and the Bay of Sleeves, and the two entrust feelings of parting to scenes of the shore.
First line, 'isona tsumu', means gathering seaweed on the rocky shore.
Second line, 'irie no nami no', means of the waves in the inlet; up to here forms a preface leading to tachikaeri in the third line.
Third line, 'tachikaeri', overlays the waves washing in and back with returning once more.
Fourth line, 'kimi miru made no', means until I see you.
Final line, 'inochi to mogana', means may my life last, closing with the wishing particle mogana.
