Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 555
Though the wind of his family's poetic tradition does not blow through him, the poet says, he has scattered his shameful poems before others as the leaves of the Wood of Shame are scattered. Saying he lacks the talent to carry on his house's way of poetry, he humbly confesses to having presented clumsy verses.
The poet was a son of Fujiwara no Akisue, founder of the Rokujō Fujiwara house, and stood to inherit its way of poetry. Ie no kaze, family wind, is a phrase for a house's inherited style, and the poem carries the modesty of a son of a poetic house. The preceding poem, 553, is by the poet's father Akisue.
The author, Akisuke, is Fujiwara no Akisuke. A son of Fujiwara no Akisue, he rose to Master of the Western Capital Office and compiled the Shika Wakashū. One of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'ie no kaze', means the family wind, the style handed down in a house, here the tradition of a house of poets.
Second line, 'fukanu mono yue', means though it does not blow, mono yue expressing contrast. Kaze in the first line and fuku are related words.
Third line, 'Hazukashi no', overlays the name of the Wood of Hazukashi, a famous place in Yamashiro, with the sense of shameful.
Fourth line, 'mori no koto no ha', overlays the leaves of the wood with words of poetry. Ha, leaves, is a related word to fuku in the second line and chirashi in the final line.
Final line, 'chirashihatetsuru', means I have scattered them all, closing with lingering feeling on the attributive of the perfective tsu.
