Sugikikeru tsukihi no hodo mo shiraretsutsu konomi o miru mo aware naru kana

English Translation
The months and the days
that have passed are known to me
as time goes by, and
when I look upon this fruit
how deeply it moves my heart
Meaning
I come to feel how many months and days have gone by, and looking at this fruit, and at you yourself, I am deeply moved.
Commentary
Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 563

Coming to know the length of the months and days gone by, the poet is deeply moved on seeing this fruit, and on seeing the other's own person. To the author of the preceding poem, 562, who lamented growing old after long service, the reply uses the same pivot konomi to return a heartfelt sense of the years shared.
It takes up konomi no hodo from the second line of the preceding poem in konomi o miru in the fourth line, and aware in the preceding poem in its own final line.

First line, 'sugikikeru', means that have passed, using the attributive of keri.
Second line, 'tsukihi no hodo mo', means the span of months and days, taking up hodo from konomi no hodo o in the second line of the preceding poem.
Third line, 'shiraretsutsu', means coming to be known, the spontaneous ru followed by tsutsu of continuation.
Fourth line, 'konomi o miru mo', is a pivot in which konomi means both tree fruit and this body, left in kana. It takes up konomi in the second line of the preceding poem, 562.
Final line, 'aware naru kana', means how deeply moving, closing with the exclamatory kana. It takes up aware in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
