Urayamashi kumo no kakehashi tachikaeri futatabi noboru michi o shiraba ya

English Translation
How I envy you,
up the ladder in the clouds
returning once more,
how I wish to know the way
you climb back up a second time
Meaning
How I envy you! I wish I knew the way you found to return and climb once more the ladder that reaches into the clouds.
Commentary
Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 570

How enviable, the poet says; he wishes he knew the way to return and climb a second time the ladder that reaches into the clouds of the court. Kumo no kakehashi, the ladder of clouds, stands for admission to the palace hall, and the poet envies someone who, once barred, has been readmitted, and longs to learn that way himself.
Like kumo no kayoiji in poem 529 in this book, it uses clouds to express the way to the court. The next poem, 571, also sings of kumoi no tsuki, the moon above the clouds, lamenting distance from the court. The first line urayamashi is the same as that of poem 538 in this book.

First line, 'urayamashi', means how I envy you, the poem breaking after the first line on the final form of the adjective. It is the same word as the first line of poem 538 in this book.
Second line, 'kumo no kakehashi', means a ladder spanning the clouds, a figure for admission to the palace. It echoes kumo no kayoiji in poem 529 in this book.
Third line, 'tachikaeri', means returning, going back to the court once more.
Fourth line, 'futatabi noboru', means climbing up again, tied to kakehashi, ladder, in the second line.
Final line, 'michi o shiraba ya', means how I wish to know the way, closing with the wishing particle baya.
