Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 620
How sad, the poet says, to see the name that has not rotted away with her daughter beneath the moss but remains unburied. The poem is said to have been composed after the death of her daughter Koshikibu no Naishi, when a robe the Retired Empress Jōtōmon'in had given each year arrived with Koshikibu no Naishi's name written on it. Though the daughter's body lies beneath the moss, her name alone remains in this world, and in this the mother voices her deep grief.
The closing poem of this book, 665, laments a self long buried in the world, standing in contrast to this poem's unburied name.
The author, Izumi Shikibu, was the daughter of Ōe no Masamune, Governor of Echizen; she married Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, and bore Koshikibu no Naishi. She served the Retired Empress Jōtōmon'in, Shōshi. One of her poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'morotomo ni', means together, that is, together with her dead daughter.
Second line, 'koke no shita ni mo', means beneath the moss, pointing to the grave.
Third line, 'kuchi mo sede', means without decaying, using the negative particle de.
Fourth line, 'uzumorenu na o', means the unburied name, pointing to the daughter's name written on the robe. Beneath the moss, decaying and buried are linked. It contrasts with umorenuru kana in the final line of 665 in this book.
Final line, 'miru zo kanashiki', means how sad to see it, the particle zo answered by the attributive kanashiki.
