Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 630
Waking from a dream at a voice chanting the name of Amida Buddha, the poet sees the moon flowing toward the west. Roused from the dream of delusion by the voice of the nembutsu, the poet overlays the moon moving toward the Western Pure Land with a wish for rebirth there.
Poem 647 in this book shares nearly the same first and second lines, amidabu to tonauru koe, and sings of rowing away from the sea of suffering with the voice of the nembutsu as an oar. Poem 580 in Book Nine likewise entrusts a wish for rebirth to the moon setting in the west.
The author is given in the text as Sakanoue no Iratsume, but she was a poet of the Man'yōshū in the Nara period, and the dates do not fit for the author of a poem on the nembutsu. The author cannot be determined.
First line, 'amidabu to', means Amida Buddha, the name chanted in the nembutsu. It is the same as the first line of 647 in this book.
Second line, 'tonauru koe ni', means at the voice chanting. It echoes tonauru koe o in the second line of 647 in this book.
Third line, 'yume samete', means waking from a dream, overlaid with waking from the dream of delusion. It also echoes samuru hodo koso in the fourth line of 618 in this book.
Fourth line, 'nishi e nagaruru', means flowing west, describing the moon moving across the western sky. The west is the direction of Amida's Pure Land.
Final line, 'tsuki o koso mire', means it is the moon I see, the particle koso answered by the realis mire.
