Book Ten Miscellaneous Poems II 634
Had there been no mountain wind of Vulture Peak to blow back the hem of the robe, could the poet have seen the precious jewel sewn into its lining? Drawing on the parable of the jewel in the robe told in the Lotus Sutra's chapter on the prophecy for the five hundred disciples, the poem likens the Buddha's preaching to the mountain wind and sings of coming, through that teaching, to recognize the Buddha nature within oneself.
The parable tells of a man whose friend sewed a jewel into the lining of his robe, who lived in poverty without knowing it until he was later told; the jewel in the robe also appears in 640 in this book.
First line, 'fukikaesu', means blowing back, the wind turning back the hem of a robe.
Second line, 'washi no yamakaze', means the mountain wind of Vulture Peak, the mountain where the Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra, standing for his preaching.
Third line, 'nakariseba', means had there been none, se, the irrealis of the past ki, with ba, answering mashi in the final line to form a counterfactual. It is the same as the third line of 631 in this book.
Fourth line, 'koromo no ura no', means in the lining of the robe, drawing on the parable of the jewel in the robe. It echoes koromo no tama o in the second line of 640 in this book.
Final line, 'tama o mimashi ya', means would I have seen the jewel, the counterfactual mashi with ya forming a rhetorical question. Blowing back, robe and lining are associated words.
