Book Eleven Variant Poems 666
Though the spring haze rises to hide the fields, the poet has come to the fields of Hikuma, a place whose name speaks of pulling up young pines. Drawing on the custom of the first Day of the Rat in the New Year, when people went out to the fields to pull up young pines and pray for long life, the poem joins the place name Hikuma with hiku, to pull.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it is placed after 22 in Book One. Poem 22 also sings of the pines of the Day of the Rat on Kasuga Plain, so poems on pulling young pines on that day stand side by side.
The author, Masafusa, is Ōe no Masafusa, a son of Ōe no Narihira, who became Provisional Middle Counselor and Acting Governor-General of Dazaifu. Known as the foremost scholar of his day, he was called Gōsotsu. One of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'harugasumi', means the spring haze.
Second line, 'tachikakusedomo', means though it rises and hides, the particle domo expressing contrast. It describes the haze covering the fields.
Third line, 'himekomatsu', means the little pines, pointing to the young pines pulled on the Day of the Rat.
Fourth line, 'hikuma no nobe ni', means to the fields of Hikuma, joining the famous place Hikumano with hiku, to pull the little pines.
Final line, 'ware wa kinikeri', means I have come, the perfective nu followed by the exclamatory keri.
