Oto ni dani tamoto o nurasu shigure kana maki no itaya no yoru no nezame ni

English Translation
With its sound alone
it drenches my sleeves in tears,
the chill winter rain,
under roof of cedar boards
as I lie awake at night
Meaning
This early winter rain wets my sleeves with its sound alone, as I lie awake at night beneath a roof of cedar boards.
Commentary
Book Eleven Variant Poems 683

Lying awake at night in a house roofed with cedar boards, the poet finds that just hearing the early winter rain beat on the roof wets the sleeves with tears. By saying that the sound alone, not the falling rain, wets the sleeves, the poem conveys the loneliness of waking at night and its tears.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it is placed after 259 in Book Four. Poems on early winter rain continue around it.

First line, 'oto ni dani', means even with its sound, the particle dani naming a lesser thing to suggest a greater.
Second line, 'tamoto o nurasu', means wetting my sleeves, overlaying the rain with tears.
Third line, 'shigure kana', means this early winter rain, closing with kana; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'maki no itaya no', means of a house roofed with cedar boards, a roof on which the rain sounds clearly.
Final line, 'yoru no nezame ni', means when I wake at night, inverted with the lines before.
