Book Eleven Variant Poems 686
The feathered cloaks of the mandarin ducks, though they put on the frost as an outer robe, must grow all the colder for it. Seeing the frost on their wings as an outer garment, the poem uses the paradox that more layers only bring more cold to convey the chill of a winter night by the water.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it is placed after 296 in Book Four. Poems 297 and 298 in Book Four, which follow, also sing of mandarin ducks, and 298 thinks of a duck sleeping alone on a cold frosty night.
The author, Taikenmon'in no Horikawa, was a daughter of Minamoto no Akinaka, Head of the Council of Divinities, and served as a lady-in-waiting to Taikenmon'in, Shōshi. One of her poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'nakanaka ni', means all the more, on the contrary, expressing a result opposite to what one would expect.
Second line, 'shimo no uwagi o', means the outer robe of frost, seeing the frost on the wings as an outer garment.
Third line, 'kasanete mo', means even when layered on, the particle temo expressing a concessive supposition.
Fourth line, 'oshi no kegoromo', means the feather cloak of the mandarin duck. Poem 298 in Book Four also sings of mandarin ducks.
Final line, 'saemasaruramu', means must grow colder still, closing with the present conjectural ramu. It shares frost and chill with sayuru shimoyo no in the fourth line of 298 in Book Four.
