Book Eleven Variant Poems 697
Idle and lonely, the poet recalls the one once met and wonders how many months have passed in brooding without a meeting. Looking back on the long months apart, the poem expresses an unending longing.
This poem is found only in a variant manuscript line of the anthology; in the variant order it follows the preceding poem, 696, after 462 in Book Eight.
First line, 'tsurezure to', means idly and forlornly.
Second line, 'omoi zo izuru', means I remember, the particle zo answered by the attributive izuru.
Third line, 'mishi hito o', means the one I once met, using the attributive shi of the past ki.
Fourth line, 'awade ikutsuki', means how many months without meeting, using the negative particle de.
Final line, 'nagameshitsuramu', means have I spent lost in thought, the perfective tsu followed by the present conjectural ramu.
