Hito shirenu kokoro no uchi ni moyuru hi wa keburi mo tatade kuyuri koso sure
The fire that burns inside a heart no one knows of sends up no smoke at all; it only smoulders on, unseen.
Fuji no ne no taenu omoi mo aru mono o kuyuru wa tsuraki kokoro narikeri
On the peak of Fuji there is a fire that never goes out; and yours only smoulders — which is, after all, a cold heart.
Sasaranami ma mo naku kishi o araumeri nagisa kiyoku wa kimi tomare to ka
The rippling waves keep washing at the shore without stopping. And if the strand is clean, is that to say: my lord, stay here a while?
Yomogi oite aretaru yado o uguisu no hitoku to naku ya tare to ka matan
Over this ruined house where the mugwort has grown, the warbler calls that someone is coming. And whom am I supposed to wait for?
