Fukiwatasu kaze ni aware o hitoshimete izuku mo sugoki aki no yūgure
The wind that sweeps across fills every place alike with sadness, and everywhere is chillingly lonely in this autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Obotsukana aki wa ika naru yue no areba suzuro ni mono no kanashikaruran
How puzzling it is. What reason can autumn have that, for no cause I can name, everything seems so sad?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nanigoto o ika ni omou to nakeredomo tamoto kawakanu aki no yūgure
Though it is not that I brood over anything in particular, or in any particular way, my sleeves never dry in the autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani to naku monoganashiku zo miewataru Tobata no omo no aki no yūgure
For no reason I can tell, everything looks sad as far as the eye can see across the rice fields of Toba in the autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nezame tsutsu nagaki yo kana to iwareno ni iku aki satemo waga mi henuran
Waking again and again and sighing what a long night it is, here on the moor of Iware, how many autumns have I spent this way?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ōkata no tsuyu ni wa nani no naru naran tamoto ni oku wa namida narikeri
The common dew that lies everywhere, what can it be that has turned into it? The dew that lies upon my sleeves, I find, is my own tears.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yamazato no sotomo no oka no takaki ki ni sozorogamashiki akisemi no koe
In a tall tree on the hill behind a house in the mountain village, the autumn cicadas are singing in restless clamor.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tama ni nuku tsuyu wa koborete Musashino no kusa no ha musubu aki no hatsukaze
The dew that was strung like jewels spills to the ground, and the first wind of autumn blows across Musashi Moor, knotting the blades of grass together.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ho ni idete shino no osusuki maneku no ni tawarete tateru ominaeshi kana
On the moor where the slender pampas grass, putting out its plumes, beckons as if revealing its heart, the maidenflower stands as though flirting in reply.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hana o koso nobe no mono to wa mi ni kitsure kurureba mushi no ne o mo kikikeri
I came to see the flowers, thinking they were what the moor had to offer, but as the day grew dark I found myself listening to the insects' voices as well.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ogi no ha o fukisugite yuku kaze no oto ni kokoro midaruru aki no yūgure
At the sound of the wind blowing past through the leaves of the reed grass, my heart falls into turmoil in the autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hareyaranu miyama no kiri no taedae ni honoka ni shika no koe kikoyu nari
Through the gaps in the mist that never quite lifts from the deep mountains, the voice of a deer comes to me faintly, now and then.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kanete yori kozue no iro o omou kana shigure hajimuru miyamabe no sato
Already I find myself imagining the colors the treetops will take on, now that the first autumn showers have begun in this village at the foot of the deep mountains.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shika no ne o kakine ni komete kiku nomi ka tsuki mo sumikeri aki no yamazato
Not only do I hear the deer calling as if they were held close within my hedge; the moon too dwells here, shining clear, in this mountain village in autumn.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Io ni moru tsuki no kage koso sabishikere yamada wa hita no oto bakari shite
Lonely indeed is the moonlight that leaks into my hut, while in the hillside paddies nothing sounds but the clatter of the bird clappers.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Wazuka naru niwa no kogusa no shiratsuyu o motomete yadoru aki no yo no tsuki
Seeking out the white dew on the little grasses of my small garden, the autumn night's moon comes to lodge its light in each drop.
