Nani to kaku kokoro o sae wa tsukusuran waga nageki nite kururu aki ka wa
Why do I wear out even my heart like this? Is it by my sighing that autumn is drawing to its close? It is not.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no yo no sora ni izu chō na nomi shite kage honoka naru yūzukuyo kana
The moon is said to have risen in the autumn night sky, but only in name, for its light is still faint in this early evening moon.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ama no hara tsuki takenoboru kumoji o ba wakite mo kaze no fukiharawanan
Above all, may the wind sweep clear the cloudy path along which the moon climbs high across the plain of heaven.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ureshi to ya matsu hito goto ni omouran yama no ha izuru aki no yo no tsuki
Does everyone who has waited for it think how glad they are, as the autumn night's moon comes up over the rim of the mountains?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nakanaka ni kokoro tsukusu mo kurushiki ni kumoraba irine aki no yo no tsuki
Since it only pains me the more to spend my heart on you, if you are going to be clouded over, then set and be gone, moon of the autumn night.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ika bakari ureshikaramashi aki no yo no tsuki sumu sora ni kumo nakariseba
How happy I would be if only there were no clouds in the sky where the autumn night's moon shines so clear.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Harimagata nada no mioki ni kogiidete atari omowanu tsuki o nagamen
I will row out beyond the rough open waters off the shore of Harima and gaze upon the moon there, with nothing around to block my view.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Isayowade izuru wa tsuki no ureshikute iru yama no ha wa tsuraki narikeri
How glad I am when the moon comes out without lingering, and how cruel is the mountain rim behind which it sets.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mizu no omo ni yadoru tsuki sae irinuru wa ike no soko ni mo yama ya aruran
Even the moon reflected on the water's surface has set and vanished; can there be mountains at the bottom of the pond as well?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shitawaruru kokoro ya yuku to yama no ha ni shibashi na iriso aki no yo no tsuki
Lest my heart, longing for you, should follow you away, do not sink behind the mountain rim just yet, moon of the autumn night.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Akuru made yoi yori sora ni kumo nakute mata koso kakaru tsuki mizaritsure
From early evening until dawn there was not a single cloud in the sky; never before have I seen such a moon.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Asajiwara hazue no tsuyu no tama goto ni hikari tsuranuku aki no yo no tsuki
On the moor of low cogon grass, the autumn night's moon threads its light through every jewel of dew upon the tips of the leaves.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no yo no tsuki o yuki ka to magaureba tsuyu mo arare no kokochi koso sure
Since I mistake the autumn night's moonlight for snow, even the dew on the grass feels to me like hail.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuki narade sashiiru kage no naki mama ni kururu ureshiki aki no yamazato
Since nothing but moonlight ever comes shining in, in this mountain village in autumn I am glad when the day grows dark.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kiyomigata tsuki sumu sora no ukigumo wa Fuji no takane no keburi narikeri
At Kiyomi Bay, the drifting cloud in the sky where the moon shines so clear turns out to be smoke rising from the high peak of Fuji.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Misabi inu ike no omote no kiyokereba yadoreru tsuki mo meyasukarikeri
Since the surface of the pond lies clear, with no film of water rust upon it, the moon that is mirrored there is lovely to see as well.
