Karanishiki Tatsuta no yama mo ima yori wa momiji nagara ni tokiwa naranan
From now on, I wish that Mount Tatsuta would stay just as it is in its autumn colors, unchanging forever like the evergreens.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Karakoromo Tatsuta no yama no momijiba wa hatamono mo naki nishiki narikeri
The autumn leaves of Mount Tatsuta, I see, are a brocade woven without any loom.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Iku ki to mo e koso miwakane akiyama no momiji no nishiki yoso ni tatereba
I cannot tell how many trees there are, for the brocade of the autumn mountain's leaves stands far away.
Gosen Wakashu - Mibu no Tadamine
Akikaze no uchifuku kara ni yama mo no mo nabete nishiki ni orikaesu kana
No sooner does the autumn wind blow than it weaves the hills and fields alike over again into brocade.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Nado sara ni aki ka to towamu karanishiki Tatsuta no yama no momiji suru yo o
Why should I ask now whether autumn has come, in a season when Mount Tatsuta, where brocade is cut, has turned to autumn colors?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ada nari to ware wa minaku ni momijiba o iro no kawareru aki shi nakereba
I do not see the autumn leaves as fickle, for there has never been an autumn when their colors were any different.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tamakazura Katsuragiyama no momijiba wa omokage ni nomi miewataru kana
The autumn leaves of Mount Katsuragi go on appearing to me, but only as an image in my mind.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Akigiri no tachi shi kakuseba momijiba wa obotsukanakute chirinu beranari
Since the autumn mist rises and hides them, the colored leaves seem likely to scatter before they can be clearly seen.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Kagamiyama yama kakikumori shigururedo momiji akaku zo aki wa miekeru
Though Mount Kagami, the Mirror Mountain, is clouded over and dim with showers, its autumn leaves were red and bright, and autumn could be seen all the same.
Gosen Wakashu - Sosei
Kazu shirazu kimi ga yowai o nobaetsutsu na tataru yado no tsuyu to naranan
May this dew, lengthening your life past all counting, become the dew of this house whose name is so well known.
Gosen Wakashu - Ise
Tsuyu dani mo na tataru yado no kiku naraba hana no aruji ya ikuyo naruran
If even the dew of the chrysanthemums is famed at your house, how many lifetimes must the mistress of those flowers live?
Gosen Wakashu - Fujiwara no Masatada
Kiku no ue ni okiiru beku mo aranaku ni chitose no mi o mo tsuyu ni nasu kana
Though dew can never stay upon the chrysanthemum, even a body meant to live a thousand years has been turned to dew.
Gosen Wakashu - Ise
Kiku no hana Nagatsuki goto ni sakikureba hisashiki kokoro aki ya shiruramu
Since the chrysanthemums have bloomed on and on each ninth month, does autumn know their long-enduring heart?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Na ni shi oeba Nagatsuki goto ni kimi ga tame kakine no kiku wa nioe to zo omou
Since the Long Month bears that name, each ninth month I wish the chrysanthemums by the fence would bloom in all their glory, for your sake.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Furusato o wakarete sakeru kiku no hana tabi nagara koso niou beranare
The chrysanthemum flower that blooms here, parted from its old home, seems to shine in all its glory even while still on its journey.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Nani ni kiku iro somekaeshi niouran hana motehayasu kimi mo konaku ni
For what do the chrysanthemums dye their colors anew and bloom so brightly, when you, who would praise the flowers, no longer come?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
