Hanasusuki soyo to mo sureba akikaze no fuku ka to zo kiku hitori nuru yo wa
Whenever the plumed pampas grass rustles, I hear it as the autumn wind blowing, on nights when I sleep alone.
Gosen Wakashu - Ariwara no Muneyoshi
Hanasusuki ho ni ideyasuki kusa nareba mi ni naran to wa tanomarenaku ni
Plumed pampas grass is a grass so quick to come out into plume that I cannot trust it ever to bear fruit.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Akikaze ni sasowarewataru karigane wa kumoi haruka ni kyō zo kikoyuru
The wild geese, lured by the autumn wind as they cross the sky, can be heard today, far off among the clouds.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Aki no yo ni kari ka mo nakite wataru nari waga omou hito no kotozute ya seshi
On this autumn night the wild geese seem to cry as they cross the sky—did the one I love send me some message by them?
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Akikaze ni kumo tobiwakete kuru kari no chiyo ni kawaranu koe kikoyu nari
On the autumn wind, the wild geese come parting the clouds in their flight, and I hear their voices, unchanged through a thousand ages.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Mono omou to tsukihi no yuku mo shirazaritsu kari koso nakite aki to tsugetsure
Lost in brooding, I never noticed the months and days slipping past; it was the wild geese, crying, that told me autumn had come.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Karigane no nakitsuru nae ni karakoromo Tatsuta no yama wa momiji shinikeri
Even as the wild geese cried, the hills of Tatsuta turned to autumn colors.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Akikaze ni sasowarewataru karigane wa mono omou hito no yado o yokanan
I wish the wild geese, lured by the autumn wind as they cross the sky, would pass by and shun the house of one lost in sorrow.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tare kike to naku karigane zo waga yado no obana ga sue o sugigate ni shite
For whom to hear do the wild geese cry like this, lingering above the tips of the pampas plumes by my house as if unable to pass them by?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Yukikaeri koko mo kashiko mo tabi nare ya kuru aki goto ni karikari to naku
Is it because, going and returning, here and there alike, all is a journey to them, that every autumn as it comes round the geese cry out "kari, kari"—"only for a while"?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Aki goto ni kuredo kaereba tanomanu o koe ni tatetsutsu kari to nomi naku
Each autumn they come, yet because they go home again I never count on them; still they keep crying aloud nothing but "kari"—"only for a while."
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Hitasura ni waga omowanaku ni onore sae karikari to nomi nakiwataruran
It is not as though I dwell on it single-mindedly, so why should you, too, cry nothing but "kari, kari"—"only for a while"—as you cross the sky?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Toshi goto ni kumoji madowanu karigane wa kokorozukara ya aki o shiruran
Year after year the wild geese never lose their way along the paths of the clouds; do they know of their own hearts that autumn has come?
Gosen Wakashu - Oshikochi no Mitsune
Ama no kawa kari zo to wataru Saoyama no kozue wa mube mo irozukinikeri
It is the wild geese that cross the River of Heaven, and so, as well they might, the treetops of Mount Sao have taken on their autumn colors.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Akigiri no Tachino no koma o hiku toki wa kokoro ni norite kimi zo koishiki
Now, as I lead the colts of Tachino, where the autumn mists rise, you ride upon my heart, and I long for you.
Gosen Wakashu - Fujiwara no Tadanobu
Isonokami Furuno no kusa mo aki wa nao iro koto ni koso aratamarikere
Even the grasses of Furu at Isonokami, old as their name may be, are still renewed in autumn, each in a color all its own.
Gosen Wakashu - Ariwara no Motokata
