On the autumn wind,
parting the clouds as they fly,
the wild geese come on—
a voice unchanged through a thousand
ages comes to my ears now

On the autumn wind, the wild geese come parting the clouds in their flight, and I hear their voices, unchanged through a thousand ages.
Commentary
Book Seven Autumn Poems III 357

Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says he hears the voices of wild geese coming on the autumn wind, parting the clouds as they fly, voices unchanged through a thousand ages. In the cries of the geese that return every year without fail, it praises the timeless round of autumn.
Where the preceding poem looked to the geese for tidings from someone far away, this one sings of the changelessness of their voices themselves.
The poet, called "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The text gives the second line as "kumo tobiwakete," which does not match "kiri tobiwakete" in the kana reading line. The wording of the text is followed here.

The first line, "Akikaze ni," means "on the autumn wind," the same opening as 355 of this book.
The second line, "kumo tobiwakete," means "parting the clouds as they fly," showing the vigor of geese pushing through the clouds high in the sky.
The third line, "kuru kari no," means "of the geese that come."
The fourth line, "chiyo ni kawaranu," means "unchanged through a thousand ages."
In the last line, "nari" is the auxiliary of inference from sound: "their voices are heard." Like "wataru nari" in the third line of the preceding poem, it knows the passing of the geese by their voices.
