Yo no naka no uki o mo shirade sumu tsuki no kage wa waga mi no kokochi koso sure
The light of the moon that shines clear, knowing nothing of the sorrows of the world, seems to me like my very self.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka wa kumorihatenuru tsuki nare ya saritomo to mishi kage mo matarezu
Is the world a moon clouded over completely? Even the light I once watched for, hoping it would come in the end, I no longer find myself waiting for.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itou yo mo tsuki sumu aki ni narinureba nagaraezu wa to omou naru kana
Even in this world I have come to loathe, now that autumn has come with its clear moon, I find myself thinking: had I not lived on, I would never have seen it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saranu dani ukarete mono o omou mi no kokoro o sasou aki no yo no tsuki
Even without it I am restless and lost in brooding thought, yet the autumn night's moon lures my heart away still further.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sutete inishi ukiyo ni tsuki no sumade are na saraba kokoro no tomarazaramashi
If only the moon would not shine so clear in the sorrowful world I have abandoned; then my heart would not be held back in it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Anagachi ni yama ni nomi sumu kokoro kana tare ka wa tsuki no iru o oshimanu
My heart is set, single-mindedly, on living only in the hills; for who is there who does not grieve to see the moon sink behind them?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Furisakeshi hito no kokoro zo shirarenuru koyoi Mikasa no tsuki o nagamete
Tonight, gazing at the moon over Mount Mikasa, I have come to understand the heart of the one who once looked up to it from far away.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hiru to miyuru tsuki ni akuru o shiramashi ya toki tsuku kane no oto sezariseba
In moonlight so bright it seems like day, would I ever have known that the night had ended, had the temple bell not tolled the hour?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Katasogi no yukiawanu ma yori moru tsuki ya saete misode no shimo ni okuran
Does the moonlight, leaking through the gap where the crossed rafters of the shrine roof do not meet, lie cold and clear as frost upon the sacred sleeves of the god?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nami ni yadoru tsuki o migiwa ni yuriyosete kagami ni kakuru Sumiyoshi no kishi
The shore at Sumiyoshi rocks the moon reflected on the waves toward the water's edge and hangs it there like a mirror.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Akazu nomi miyako nite mishi kage yori mo tabi koso tsuki wa aware narikere
More than the moonlight I gazed at in the capital, never tiring of it, it is on a journey that the moon moves my heart most deeply.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mishi mama ni sugata mo kage mo kawaraneba tsuki zo miyako no katami narikeru
Its shape and its light are unchanged from when I saw it there, so it is the moon that serves as my keepsake of the capital.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuki wa nao yonayona goto ni yadoru beshi waga musubioku kusa no iori ni
Still, night after night, the moon will surely come to lodge in the grass hut I tie together wherever I stop on my way.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nami no oto o kokoro ni kakete akasu kana toma moru tsuki no kage o tomo nite
I pass the night with my heart on the sound of the waves, my only companion the moonlight leaking through the rush-mat roof.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Morotomo ni tabi naru sora ni tsuki mo idete sume ya kage no aware naruran
The moon too has come out into the sky of my journey, as if travelling with me; is it because it shines so clear here that its light moves me so?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aware shiru hito mitaraba to omou kana tabine no toko ni yadoru tsukikage
If only someone who understands the beauty of things could see it, I think: the moonlight lodging on the bed where I sleep on my journey.
