Mushi no ne o yoso ni omoite akasaneba tamoto mo tsuyu wa nobe ni kawaraji
Since I do not pass the night treating the insects' cries as no concern of mine, my sleeves must be no less wet with dew than the moor itself.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nobe ni naku mushi mo ya mono wa kanashiki ni kotaemashikaba toite kikamashi
Do the insects crying on the moor feel sad as I do? If only they could answer, I would ask and hear what they have to say.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no yo o hitori ya nakite akasamashi tomonau mushi no koe nakariseba
Would I have wept alone through the autumn night until dawn, if there were not these insect voices crying along with me?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no yo ni koe mo yasumazu naku mushi o tsuyu madoromade kikiakasu kana
On the autumn night, never dozing even for a dewdrop's moment, I lie listening until dawn to the insects that cry without resting their voices.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no no no obana ga sode ni manekasete ika naru hito o matsumushi no koe
Having the pampas plumes of the autumn fields beckon with their sleeves, whom are you waiting for, pine cricket, with your song?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yomosugara tamoto ni mushi no ne o kakete haraiwazurau sode no shiratsuyu
All night long the insects' voices hang upon my sleeves, and I cannot manage to brush away the white dew gathered there.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kirigirisu yosamu ni naru o tsugegao ni makura no moto ni kitsutsu naku nari
As if to let me know that the nights are turning cold, the cricket keeps coming right to my pillow to sing.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mushi no ne o yowariyuku ka to kiku kara ni kokoro ni aki no hikazu o zo furu
The moment I hear the insects' voices and wonder whether they are growing weaker, I find myself counting over in my heart how many days of autumn have gone by.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki fukami yowaru wa mushi no koe nomi ka kiku ware totemo tanomi ya wa aru
With autumn deepening, is it only the insects' voices that grow weak? What hope is there even for me, who listens to them?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mushi no ne ni tsuyukekaru beki tamoto ka wa ayashi ya kokoro mono omou beshi
Should my sleeves be wet with tears at the mere sound of insects? Surely not. How strange; my heart must be brooding over something of its own.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hitorine no tomo ni wa narete kirigirisu naku ne o kikeba monoomoi sou
The cricket has become a familiar friend on the nights I sleep alone, yet when I listen to it singing, my brooding only deepens.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kusa fukami wakeirite tou hito mo are ya furiyuku ato no suzumushi no koe
The grass grows so thick; I wish someone would part it and come to visit, here where the old dwelling falls into decay and the bell crickets ring their song.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kabe ni ouru kogusa ni waburu kirigirisu shigururu niwa no tsuyu itou beshi
The cricket crying forlornly on the little grasses growing from the wall must be shunning the dew of the garden, wet with autumn showers.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kohagi saku yamada no kuro no mushi no ne ni io moru hito ya sode nurasuran
At the insects' cries along the ridges of the hillside paddies where the little bush clover blooms, could the man who keeps watch from the hut be wetting his sleeves with tears?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Uchisuguru hito naki michi no yūsareba koe nite okuru kutsuwamushi kana
On the road where no one passes, when evening comes, the bridle cricket sends me on my way with its song.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nagamureba sode ni mo tsuyu zo koborekeru sotomo no oda no aki no yūgure
As I gaze out, lost in thought, dew has spilled even onto my sleeves, in the autumn dusk over the fields behind the house.
Sankashu - Saigyō
