Fukisuguru kaze sae koto ni mi ni zo shimu yamada no io no aki no yūgure
Even the wind that blows past pierces me especially deeply at the hut by the hillside paddies in the autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kimi ga sumu yado no tsubo o ba kiku zo kazaru yama no miya to ya iu bekaruran
The inner court of my lord's dwelling is adorned with chrysanthemums; should it not be called a palace of the immortals?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Iku aki ni ware ainuran nagatsuki no kokonoka ni tsumu yae no shiragiku
How many autumns have I lived to see, picking the many-petaled white chrysanthemums on the ninth day of the ninth month?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki fukami narabu hana naki kiku nareba tokoro o shimo no oke to koso omoe
Now that autumn has deepened and no other flower remains to stand beside the chrysanthemum, I would have even the frost defer to it and settle somewhere else.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mase naku wa nani o shirushi ni omowamashi tsuki ni magayou shiragiku no hana
Were it not for the low fence, by what sign could I have known they were there, the white chrysanthemums that blend into the moonlight?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kokoro naki mi ni mo aware wa shirarekeri shigi tatsu sawa no aki no yūgure
Even I, who should have no heart for such feelings, cannot help but know the deep sadness of things: a snipe rises from the marsh in the autumn dusk.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tachiyorite tonari tou beki kaki ni soite hima naku haeru yaemugura kana
I meant to stop by and call on my neighbor, but along the fence the dense creeping weeds have spread without leaving a single gap.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itsu yori ka momiji no iro wa somu beki to shigure ni kumoru sora ni towaba ya
I would like to ask the sky, clouded with autumn showers, from when the colors of the autumn leaves are meant to begin.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itokayama shigure ni iro o somesasete katsugatsu oreru nishiki narikeri
Mount Itoka has had the autumn showers dye its colors, and has only just begun, little by little, to weave its brocade.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sometekeri momiji no iro no kurenai o shiguru to mieshi miyamabe no sato
How it has dyed the leaves the deep crimson of autumn, here in the village by the deep mountains where the cold showers seemed to fall.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saranu dani koe yowakarishi matsumushi no aki no sue ni wa kiki mo wakarezu
The pine cricket's voice was weak enough before, and now, at the end of autumn, I can no longer even make it out.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kozue areba kareyuku nobe wa ikaga sen mushi no ne nokose aki no yamazato
With the treetops still bright, the hills are well enough, but what can be done for the withering moor? Leave me at least the insects' voices, mountain village in autumn.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Samazama no nishiki arikeru miyama kana hana mishi mine o shigure sometsutsu
What many brocades these deep mountains hold: the cold showers are dyeing the very peaks where once I gazed at cherry blossoms.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kagiri areba ikaga wa iro no masaru beki akazu shigururu Ogurayama kana
Since there is a limit, how could the color of the leaves grow any deeper? And yet the showers fall on Mount Ogura, never tiring.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Momijiba no chirade shigure no hikazu heba ika bakari naru iro ni wa aramashi
If the autumn leaves never fell, but went on through day after day of showers, how deep, I wonder, would their color have grown?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nishiki haru aki no kozue o misenu kana hedatsuru koto no yami o tsukurite
The mist will not let me see the autumn treetops spread like brocade, making a darkness that comes between us.
Sankashu - Saigyō
