Haru no kasumi ie tachiidete yukiniken kigisu tatsu no o yakitekeru kana
As the spring haze rises, so the pheasant must have risen and left its home; the field from which pheasants take flight has been burned.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kataoka ni shiba utsuri shite naku kigisu tatsu haoto tote takakaranu ka wa
On the hillside the pheasant calls as it moves from brush to brush. And the whirr of its wings as it takes flight, is that not loud as well?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ka o tomen hito ni koso mate yamazato no kakine no ume no chiranu kagiri wa
I will wait for those who come seeking the fragrance, so long as the plum by my hedge in this mountain village has not scattered.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kokoro sen shizu ga kakine no ume wa ayana yoshinaku suguru hito todomekeri
I must be careful. The plum by this humble hedge, for no good reason, has stopped even people who were only passing by.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kono haru wa shizu ga kakine ni furebaite ume ga ka tomen hito shitashiman
This spring I will stay close by the humble hedge, and make friends with those who come seeking the scent of the plum.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nushi ika ni kaze wataru tote itouran yoso ni ureshiki ume no nioi o
How the owner must resent the wind for blowing across his plum, while for me, from elsewhere, its fragrance is such a joy.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ume ga ka o tanifutokoro ni fukitamete irikon hito ni shime yo harukaze
Gather the fragrance of the plum deep into the fold of the valley, O spring breeze, and steep in it whoever comes this way.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shiba no io ni tokutoku ume no nioikite yasashiki kata mo aru sumika kana
The scent of plum has come so quickly to my brushwood hut; even this dwelling, it seems, has its touch of elegance.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ume ga ka ni taguete kikeba uguisu no koe natsukashiki haru no yamazato
Heard together with the fragrance of the plum, how dear the warbler's voice sounds here in the mountain village in spring.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsukurioki shi koke no fusuma ni uguisu wa mi ni shimu ume no ka ya niouran
In the coverlet of moss it built for itself, does the warbler lie steeped in the fragrance of the plum, sinking deep into its body?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hitori nuru kusa no makura no utsuriga wa kakine no ume no nioi narikeri
The scent that has clung to my grass pillow as I sleep alone on my journey is, I find, the fragrance of the plum blooming by the hedge.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani to naku noki natsukashiki ume yue ni sumiken hito no kokoro o zo shiru
Because of the plum that somehow makes these eaves so dear, I come to know the heart of whoever once lived here.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Harusame no noki tarekomuru tsurezure ni hito ni shirarenu hito no sumika ka
As the spring rain drips from the eaves and I stay shut away in idle loneliness, I feel this truly is the dwelling of someone the world does not know.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani to naku obotsukanaki wa ama no hara kasumi ni kiete kaeru karigane
What somehow troubles my heart is the sight of the wild geese vanishing into the haze across the wide sky as they fly home.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Karigane wa kaeru michi ni ya mayouran Koshi no Nakayama kasumi hedatete
Are the wild geese losing their way as they fly home? For the haze has screened off Nakayama in the land of Koshi.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tamazusa no hashigaki ka to mo miyuru kana tobiokuretsutsu kaeru karigane
Like the lines written in the margin of a letter, so it looks to me: a wild goose flying home, falling behind the rest.
