Yamazato e tare o mata ko wa yobukodori hitori nomi koso suman to omou ni
Whom are you calling yet again to this mountain village, calling bird, when I mean to live here all alone?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nawashiro no mizu o kasumi wa tanabikite uchihi no ue ni kakuru narikeri
The haze trails over the water of the seedling bed, and I see it hangs across the wooden flume as well, just as the water is carried along it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kumo nakute oboro nari tomo miyuru kana kasumi kakareru haru no yo no tsuki
Though there are no clouds, how hazy it looks: the moon on a spring night with the haze drawn over it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yamagatsu no kataoka kakete shimuru io no sakai ni miyuru tama no oyanagi
At the boundary of the hut a mountain dweller has staked out across the hill, I see a willow with branches slender as the cord that strings jewels.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nakanaka ni kaze no hosu ni zo midarekeru ame ni nuretaru aoyagi no ito
Instead, it is the wind trying to dry them that has tangled them: the threads of the green willow, soaked in the rain.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Miwataseba Saho no kawara ni kurikakete kaze ni yoraruru aoyagi no ito
As I look out over the riverbank of Saho, the green willow's threads seem reeled out across it, twisted and spun by the wind.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Minasoko ni fukaki midori no iro miete kaze ni nami yoru kawayanagi kana
Deep in the water the rich green shows, and in the wind the willows by the river ripple and bend together like waves.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Matsu ni yori chiranu kokoro o yamazakura sakinaba hana no omoishiranan
O mountain cherry, once you bloom, may you come to know this heart of mine, which, through all my waiting, has never scattered elsewhere.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tare ka mata hana o tazunete Yoshinoyama koke fumiwakuru iwa tsutauran
Who else, I wonder, is seeking the blossoms on Mount Yoshino, treading through the moss and making his way from rock to rock?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Imasara ni haru o wasururu hana mo araji yasuku machitsutsu kyō mo kurasan
Surely no blossom would forget the spring at this late date. So I will wait at ease, and pass this day as well.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Obotsukana izure no yama no mine yori ka mataruru hana no sakihajimuran
How uneasy I feel: from the peak of which mountain will the blossoms I long for first begin to open?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sora ni idete izuku tomo naku tazunureba kumo to wa hana no miyuru narikeri
With my heart adrift I set out, searching with no idea where to go, and found that what had seemed to be clouds were the blossoms themselves.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yuki tojishi tani no furusu o omoiidete hana ni mutsururu uguisu no koe
Remembering its old nest in the valley shut in by snow, the warbler now sings as it frolics among the blossoms.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yoshinoyama kumo o hakari ni tazuneirite kokoro ni kakeshi hana o miru kana
Making my way deep into Mount Yoshino with only the clouds to guide me, I gaze at last upon the blossoms I have long held in my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Omoiyaru kokoro ya hana ni yukazaran kasumi kometaru Miyoshino no yama
Will my heart, reaching out from afar, fail to reach the blossoms, wrapped as they are in the haze over the hills of Yoshino?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Oshinabete hana no sakari ni narinikeri yama no ha goto ni kakaru shirakumo
Everywhere alike the blossoms have reached their height: along the rim of every mountain hang white clouds.
