Yamasuge no minaranu koto o ware ni yose iwareshi kimi wa tare to ka nuramu

Manyoshu - Lady Ōtomo no Sakanoue
Ōtomo no mitsu to wa iwaji akanesashi tereru tsukuyo ni tada ni aeri tomo
As the name of Mitsu in Ōtomo says "I have seen," so I will never say I saw you, even if we should meet face to face on a night lit bright by the moon.

Manyoshu - Kadobe no Iwatari
Karahito no koromo somu to iu murasaki no kokoro ni shimite omōyuru kamo

Tsukuyo yoshi kawa no oto kiyoshi iza koko ni yuku mo yukanu mo asobite yukamu
The moonlit night is fair and the river's sound is clear; come, here and now, those who leave and those who stay, let us enjoy ourselves before we go.
Manyoshu - Ōtomo no Yotsuna
Masokagami miakanu kimi ni okurete ya ashita yūbe ni sabitsutsu oramu
Left behind by you, whom I could never tire of seeing, like a clear mirror, must I now spend my mornings and evenings in loneliness?
Manyoshu - The Novice Mansei
Nubatama no kurokami kawari shirakete mo itaki koi ni wa au toki arikeri
Even when one's black hair has changed and turned white, there comes a time, I now know, to meet with a painful love.
Manyoshu - The Novice Mansei
Koko ni arite tsukushi ya izuchi shirakumo no tanabiku yama no kata ni shi arurashi
From here, in which direction lies Tsukushi? It must be over there, beyond the mountains where the white clouds trail.
Manyoshu - Ōtomo no Tabito
Kusakae no irie ni asaru ashitazu no ana tazutazushi tomo nashi ni shite
Like the cranes foraging among the reeds in the inlet of Kusaka, how forlorn and helpless I feel, with no friend beside me.

Aga koromo hito ni na kise so abiki suru naniwaotoko no te ni wa furu tomo
Do not let anyone else wear this robe I give you, though the lusty men of Naniwa who haul the nets may lay their hands on it.
Manyoshu - Ōtomo no Tabito
Ametsuchi to tomo ni hisashiku sumawamu to omoite arishi ie no niwa wa mo
Oh, the garden of this house, where I had thought to live on forever, enduring as heaven and earth endure.
