Yamazato wa shigureshi koro no sabishisa ni arashi no oto wa yaya masarikeri

Sankashu - Saigyō
Tou hito wa hatsuyuki o koso wakekoshika michi tojitekeri miyamabe no sato
Those who visit me made their way through the snow when it first fell, but now the path is closed: this village at the edge of the deep mountains.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Toshi no uchi wa tou hito sara ni araji kashi yuki mo yamaji mo fukaki sumika o
Until the year is over, no one at all will come to visit, I am sure, to this dwelling where both the snow and the mountain paths lie so deep.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Warinashi ya kōru kakehi no mizu yue ni omoisuteteshi haru no mataruru
How hopeless it is: because the water in the bamboo pipe has frozen, I find myself waiting for the spring I had renounced.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsune yori mo kokorobosoku zo omōyuru tabi no sora nite toshi no kurenuru
I feel more forlorn than in other years, for the year has come to its end while I am far away on my journey.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Atarashiki shiba no amido o tatekaete toshi no akuru o machiwataru kana
I have put up a new door of woven brushwood, and keep on waiting for the year to open.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Toshi kurete sono itonami wa wasurarete aranu sama naru isogi o zo suru
The year has drawn to its close, and the tasks of year's end I once had are forgotten; now I busy myself with preparations of quite another kind.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Oshinabete onaji tsukihi no sugiyukeba miyako mo kaku ya toshi wa kurenuru
Since the same months and days pass by everywhere alike, has the year come to its end in the capital too, just as it has here?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Onozukara iwanu o shitau hito ya aru to yasurau hodo ni toshi no kurenuru
Wondering whether someone might, by chance, be missing me because I had not written, I hesitated, and meanwhile the year has come to its end.
