- Shui Wakashu
Tamae kogu komokaribune no sashihaete namima mo araba yoramu to zo omou
Like the reed-cutting boat poled across Tamae, I will make my way to you on purpose, if only there is a break in the waves.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Mirume karu ama to wa nashi ni kimi kouru waga koromode no kawaku toki naki
Though I am no fisher who gathers seaweed, my sleeves, wet with longing for you whom I have no chance to see, never have a time to dry.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Mikumano no ura no hamayū momoe naru kokoro wa omoedo tada ni awanu kamo
Like the crinum lilies of the Kumano shore, their leaves layered a hundredfold, my heart thinks of you a hundredfold, yet I cannot meet you face to face.
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Asana asana kezureba tsumoru ochigami no midarete mono o omou koro kana
Like the fallen hair that piles up each morning as I comb it, all tangled, so these days my heart is tangled in troubled thoughts.
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Waga tame wa tanai no shimizu nurukeredo nao kakiyaramu sate wa sumu ya to
Toward me you are as tepid as the clear water of the field well; still I will stir it and write to you, thinking that it may then grow clear and let me dwell with you.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Sanekata
Kakiyaraba nigori koso seme asaki se no mikuzu wa tare ka sumasete mo mimu
If you stir it, it will only grow muddier; who would ever clear the debris of a shallow stream, and let such as you come to dwell?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Hito shirenu kokoro no uchi o misetaraba ima made tsuraki hito wa araji na
If only I could show you the heart I keep hidden from all, you would not go on being as cruel as you have been.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Hito shirenu omoi wa toshi mo henikeredo ware nomi shiru wa kai nakarikeri
My love, unknown to anyone, has gone on through the years, yet it is worth nothing when I alone know of it.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Saneyori
My sleeves have rotted away with tears that no one knows of; if a night of meeting should come, in what could I wrap my joy?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Do you let only your sleeves rot away? I have heard that to meet, people give even their lives in exchange.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Hito shirezu otsuru namida wa Tsu no kuni no Nagasu to miete sode zo kuchinuru
The tears I shed unseen seem to flow like Nagasu in the land of Tsu, and my sleeves have rotted away.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
She must think that every love, being called "love," is all the same; somehow I wish I could let her know what my love truly is.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
If there were no such thing as meeting at all, then I would not, as I do, resent either her coldness or my own lot.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Asatada
Au koto wa kataizari suru midoriko no tatamu tsuki ni mo awaji to ya suru
You say meeting is hard; will you refuse to meet me even in the month when the crawling infant learns to stand, when a new month begins?
Shui Wakashu - Taira no Kanemori
When I wait for our meeting as the months and days go by, I wish that today might become the promised day to come.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Au koto o itsu to mo shirade kimi ga iwamu Tokiwa no yama no matsu zo kurushiki
Not knowing when we may meet, waiting for the "time" you will name, like a pine on Mount Tokiwa, is painful indeed.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
