- Shui Wakashu
I have heard that people give their lives in exchange for a meeting; yet shall I become the first example of one who dies without ever meeting?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
The days to come that I relied on pass by at last, one after another, and it is bitter that there are no years and months in which we meet.
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Ikitareba koi suru koto no kurushiki o nao inochi o ba au ni kaeten
It is because I live that loving is so painful; so, after all, I will give my life in exchange for a meeting.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Koishinamu nochi wa nani sen ikeru hi no tame koso hito no mimaku hoshikere
What use would it be after I had died of love? It is for the days I am alive that I long to see her.
Shui Wakashu - Ōtomo no Momoyo
Aware to shi kimi dani iwaba koiwabite shinan inochi mo oshikaranaku ni
If only you would say "poor thing," then this life of mine that will end in the grief of love would not be something I regret.
Shui Wakashu - Minamoto no Tsunemoto
Hito shirezu omou kokoro o todometsutsu ikutabi kimi ga yado o suguran
Leaving behind with you the heart that loves you in secret, how many times must I pass by your house?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Not by winter showers nor by rain, but by the years that pass in longing for you, my sleeves have been drenched.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tsuyu bakari tanomeshi hodo no sugiyukeba kienu bakari no kokochi koso sure
As the time you gave me to rely on, slight as a drop of dew, slips past, I feel as though I too might vanish like the dew.
Shui Wakashu - Sugawara no Sukeaki
I never gave you so much as a dewdrop's worth of hope; how strange! On what did you let your thoughts settle, like dew?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Nagarete to tanomuru yori wa yamakawa no koishiki sese ni watari ya wa senu
Rather than make me trust in "someday, as time flows on," why will you not cross over to me at each moment of longing, as one crosses the shallows of a mountain stream?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
If we could meet, I would surely become one who never dies, for even being given hope makes my life grow longer.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ikade ka to omou kokoro no aru toki wa obomeku sae zo ureshikarikeru
When my heart longs to meet her somehow, even her vague, evasive answers seemed a joy to me.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wabitsutsu mo kinō bakari wa sugushiteki kyō ya waga mi no kagiri naruran
Pining as I was, I managed somehow to live through yesterday; will today be the end of my life?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Koitsutsu mo kyō wa kurashitsu kasumi tatsu asu no haruhi o ikade kurasan
Longing all the while, I have lived through today; but how shall I pass tomorrow's long spring day when the haze rises?
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Koitsutsu mo kyō wa arinan tamakushige aken ashita o ikade kurasamu
Longing all the while, I can get through today; but when the night opens into dawn, how shall I live through the morning that comes?
Shui Wakashu - Kakinomoto no Hitomaro
Kimi o nomi omoikakego no tamakushige aketatsu goto ni koinu hi wa nashi
Setting my heart on you alone, like the inner tray of a jeweled comb box, each time the box opens with the dawn, there is no day I do not long for you.
