What am I to do with this self, living in this sorrowful world like a charcoal kiln, destined in the end to become smoke?
Tsumi wa shimo tsuyu mo nokorazu kienuramu nagaki yosugara kuyuru omoi ni
Surely not a dewdrop of my sins remains, for they have vanished in the smoldering fire of remorse that burned all through the long night.
Watatsuumi no soko no mokuzu to mishi mono o ikade ka sora no tsuki to naruramu
I had seen it as mere seaweed scraps at the bottom of the sea; how could it become the moon in the sky?
Yomo no umi no nami ni tadayou mikuzu o mo nanae no ami ni hiki na morashi so
Even the scraps drifting on the waves of the four seas, draw them up in your sevenfold net and let none slip through.

Au koto no naki o Ukita no mori ni sumu yobukodori koso waga mi narikere
The calling bird that lives in the forest of Ukita, grieving that it can never meet its love, is none other than myself.
Koishinade kokorozukushi ni ima made mo tanomureba koso Iki no Matsubara
That I have not died of love but lived on till now, with all my heart spent, is only because I trust in you, as the name of Iki no Matsubara tells.
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Chikataka
Mi no hodo o omoishirinuru koto nomi ya tsurenaki hito no nasake naruramu
Is my being made to know my own worth the only kindness that cold-hearted person has shown me?
Aku to iu koto mo shirabaya kurenai no namida ni somaru sode ya kaeru to
I wish I knew what aku, the lye that strips dye, could do, to see whether my sleeves dyed crimson with my tears would change back.
Ito semete koishiki toki wa Harima naru Shikama ni somuru kachi yori zo kuru
When I long for you with all my heart, I come on foot, as the name of the deep blue cloth dyed at Shikama in Harima suggests.
