Tamoto yori otsuru namida wa Michinoku no Koromogawa to zo iu bekarikeru
The tears that fall from my sleeves deserve to be called the Koromo River, the River of Robes, of Michinoku.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet

Shui Wakashu - Prince Motoyoshi
Itsuka to mo omowanu sawa no ayamegusa tada tsukuzuku to ne koso nakarure
On this fifth day I cannot think when we might meet; like the iris in the marsh with its long roots, I can only weep aloud, lost in sorrow.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ouredomo koma mo susamenu ayamegusa kari ni mo hito no konu ga wabishisa
Though it grows, the iris that not even horses care for is cut by no one; so too, how forlorn it is that you will not come to me, not even in passing.
Shui Wakashu - Oshikochi no Mitsune
Kayaribi wa mono omou hito no kokoro ka mo natsu no yosugara shita ni moyuran
Is the smudge fire the heart of one who broods in love? All through the summer night it smolders, burning out of sight below.
Shui Wakashu - Onakatomi no Yoshinobu
Shinobureba kurushikarikeri shinosusuki aki no sakari ni nari ya shinamashi
To hide my love has been painful; like the slender pampas grass, shall I let it come forth in plume at the height of autumn?
Shui Wakashu - Shōkan
Omoiki ya waga matsu hito wa yoso nagara Tanabatatsume no au o mimu to wa
Did I ever imagine that, while the one I wait for stays away, I would watch the Weaver Maid meet her love?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kyō sae ya yoso ni miru beki Hikoboshi no tachinarasuran Ama no Kawanami
Must I, even today, watch from afar the waves of the River of Heaven that the Herdsman Star must be crossing, so used to the way?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wabinureba tsune wa yuyushiki Tanabata mo urayamarenuru mono ni zo arikeru
Now that love has brought me to despair, even the Tanabata stars, which I always thought ill-starred, have become a thing to envy.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tsuyu dani mo nakaramashikaba aki no yo ni tare to okiite hito o matamashi
If there were not even the dew, with whom would I sit up through the autumn night, waiting for the one I love?
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Imasara ni tou beki hito mo omōezu yaemugura shite kado saseri te e
By now I can think of no one who would come to call; tell them that thick tangles of weeds have grown up and shut my gate.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Aki wa waga kokoro no tsuyu ni aranedomo mono nagekashiki koro ni mo aru kana
Autumn is not the dew upon my heart, and yet how it is a season full of sighs and sorrow.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ashihiki no yamashita kaze mo samukeki ni koyoi mo mata ya waga hitori nen
Even the wind blowing at the foot of the mountain is cold; must I sleep alone again tonight?
